I Allegro “Life Questions”

Written while reading Phillip Glass’s autobiography "Words Without Music", the first movement of the string quartet features a unique rhythmic grouping of a beat split in three followed by a beat split in four.

II Adagio "Desolation"

The second movement of the string quartet was written one evening when I was feeling deeply lost and emotionally desolate. The process of writing and listening allowed me to recognize the serene beauty within the inner struggle as can be heard in the tierce de picardie.

III Andante "Understanding"

After the inner discoveries of the previous movement “Desolation”, “Understanding” comes with a calm clarity and sense of resolution. The third movement of the string quartet began as a simple counterpoint exercise which gives it a very ‘classical’ feeling. This contrasts with a very rhythmic section before returning to the original calm melody.

IV Finale "Happy Dance”

The final movement is a joyful high speed romp with a game of chase between the instruments. A collaboration of creativity and flowing ideas coming together in harmony… everything is better when shared with friends.
